Diamonds are for ever?

So Marina Diamandis is the next Kate Bush? My fear is that she’s the next Florence and the Machine. Name similarities aside, I suspect that now Marina and the Diamonds are signed to a major label, there will be a similar process of musical dulling-down, at the same time as marketing the artist as a wee bit odd, even a little ker-ay-zee. The campaign starts next week with the re-release of Mowgli’s Road, which I actually really like, and the remixes that are flying around it are also pretty decent, but what lies ahead? At least she’s got the advantage, Kiss With a Fist aside, of having better songs than Florence, but is that good enough in the cut-throat marketplace that the majors play in? We’ll see. The new album’s out in February. Fingers crossed.

I’m seriously hoping she won’t be dulled-down; I love her and have done for months… On one hand, in her blog, in interviews etc she has stressed that she refuses to change herself or her music to fit what a label wants….but on the other, I have seen some changes. She blogs less, replies to less fan comments and when I went to see her on the NME Radar Tour she was the only artist to not come out and do signings afterwards. I’m crossing my fingers with you.

She signed a bout a year ago, so that might allay some of your fears. But she was always aiming at being a star, and I suspect she will realign herself to suit. Needs must….
