Seven Songs: Mumford & Sons

In case anyone hasn’t been paying attention, Mumford & Sons aren’t a furniture removal company. Marcus Mumford and his three pals are an awesome banjo-wielding group who have been building up a dedicated fanbase for a year or so now, and the coming of their debut album should see them explode all over the nation’s face this year.

The Sons (as they call themselves on myspace) recently postponed a national tour, but they’ve not been slacking. They’ve been holed up in the studio, recording said album, which if it’s as anything as good as their three supercharged indie-bluegrass EPs, it will be amazing. No doubt some of the previous favourites will feature. Given their recent industry, I’m pleased that they found the time to answer my seven silly questions, and recommend some songs. These guys love music. They know what’s awesome, probably because they are too.

1. A song that’s been in your head today

Devil’s Dancefloor by Pete Roe. He supported us on our last tour and is AWEsOME

2. A song you currently love playing live

We’ve been investigating our cover of White Lies’ Unfinished Business for a laff.

3. Shuffle your ipod – what’s the first song that comes up?

Joanna Newsom - Cosmia

4. A song you wish you had written

Joanna Newsom - Cosmia

5. Your current guiltiest pleasure

Madonna - Hung Up.  Awesome.

6. A song off an album you’re currently enjoying

Heather by Shoreline - they’re a band that are part of the Willkommen Collective from Brighton - we toured with Sons of Noel and Adrian and actually went and saw them last night!

7. Tell us something about a track from your new album

One has some guitar. One has some trumpet. One has both. One we hadn’t written until we started in the studio. Recording albums is FUN.

mp3: Mumford & Sons - My Heart Told My Head

You can get all three Mumford & Sons EPs from Rawrip. The latest single, The Cave and The Open Sea is available in a lavishly-packaged 10 inch set from The Vinyl Factory. Not cheap, but it can only increase in value. The band hit the road in support of The Macabees next month, and their rescheduled UK tour is in September.

Liked your comment about them not being a furniture removal company - I’d like to see them try!

Looking forward to the M&Sons rescheduled Scala gig in Sept.

  3. 3The Daily Growl

Yeah, that should be good, though I’ll be on holiday then in advance of End of the Road Festival. M&S will be there, so no doubt will see them there. Not sure I can call them M&S though…

Saw these guys play last year in the Fall in Allston, MA at a church. Best show I’ve ever been to. They are charming, accomplished, down to earth, and sound fantastic live.
