Iron fist in a Velvet glove
The Big Pink have cracked it. Here’s a song that unites old shoegazers and today’s cool kids alike. For early 90s indie kids like myself, this isn’t anything new. Curve were doing the big guitars meet electronic beats as far back as 1991, but this is just so much better. It’s louder, meatier, dirtier with stronger vocals. Heck, it’s even got a decent tune. The scuzzy guitars recall the Jesus and Mary Chain as well as MBV. There’s a rock swagger to go with the loping beat. Basically, it rules. If this is a representative taste of their debut album, it’s going to be very awesome indeed.
Velvet is out on 7 inch and download on 4AD on 20 April. Pre-order from Rough Trade.

Sorry folks, I’ve taken it down because (a) I don’t want a visit from the ol’ Web Sheriff and more importantly (b) I don’t want to piss off the record company who are good people, and since the single is out quite soon, I don’t want to be giving it away for free for very long…
You can listen to it here http://hypem.com/#/track/774526/The+Big+Pink+-+Velvet and if ye like it, I recommend that you BUY IT!
