I don’t do all-time favourite artists and can’t stand these ‘greatest album of all time’ lists nonsense. However, if pushed - very hard - on who my favourite female singer-songwriter of all time is, I might just say Gillian Welch. It’s been way too long since her last album (six years now) and no sign of one anytime soon, so I’ve been listening to her four classics lately. If I have to wait more years for records as good as these, then so be it.
Then I remembered the amazing weekend a few years ago when I saw Gillian Welch and David Rawlings twice in the space of three days over a weekend. The Friday night at Shepherd’s Bush Empire and the Monday night at St Luke’s on Old Street, which was filmed for BBC4. Both times they were supported by their awesome Nashville mates Old Crow Medicine Show. I never saw the broadcast of the St Luke’s gig, so yesterday I thought I’d look it up on Youtube. Of course it’s there. Some songs at least. I’ve posted two of them - Red Clay Halo and their excellent encore cover of The Weight with OCMS. It’s worth looking up the others.
